Behavioural Study of Obedience
Milgram’s research into obedience to has demonstrated the powerful effect of authority figures on our behaviour. In his attempt to show that ‘the German’s are different’ hypothesis was wrong he created his famous ‘electric shock generator’ and asked participants to give ever increasing shocks to a ‘learner’ in an adjacent room.
He found that 65% of participants would continue to shock a confederate up to 450 volts even though they believed that they had seriously hurt or even killed that person. All of this was a result of a perceived authority figure just saying ‘you must go on’. Read more about the study here.
