The Rosenhan experiment is (at least in my opinion) one of the best studies in the 20 core studies that we have at the moment. It’s fascinating to see the errors that the psychiatrists made; both type one and type two. Here’s something a little different for you readers. A little video that’s been found on youtube which acts as a nice introduction to the study. It’s only 4 minutes long but I still think it’s worth a look.
“He [Rosenhan] assembled 8 people, including himself, none of whom had ever had any psychiatric problems. Each person was sent across the country to a specific mental hospital. At an agreed time, they all presented themselves at their hospital and told the psychiatrist on duty they were hearing a voice in their head that said the word “Thud”. That was the only lie they should tell otherwise they were to behave and respond completely normally…”
If you’re looking for something on the lighter side of TV that relates to Rosenhan there’s always The Simpsons. The episode Stark Raving Dad is an excellent overview and has massive amounts of psychology in it: conformity; reliability and validity of psychometrics; projective tests; the unreliability of the psychodiagnostic label; the stickiness of the psychodiagnostic label; autism; MPD and I’m sure that there’s some I forget. I’ve managed to get a copy of the video and you can get it here.
Remember you can find the full text article to Rosenhan and all the other core studies on this page.
Enjoy :)

Thank you for the Rosenhan video! PsychBLOG is fantastic for both students and teachers. I have found the full versions of the studies incredibly useful, especially to refer to when marking core studies 1.
