Review: How to get all 20 core studies into 12cm!

There’s a new CD (which are 12cm – thus the title) out that should be on all of your wish lists this summer: Mark Holah (with LearnByIT) has just released Core Studies in Psychology CD aimed at colleges and teachers as a teaching and revision aid and it’s well worth checking out.

From the press release:

This software has been designed for students of the OCR psychology syllabus. This interactive software takes the learner through the 20 core studies, using text, illustrations, animations and quizzes.

The visually stunning software is primarily aimed at students working independently and can be fully networked. The software can also be used by teachers for demonstration lessons.

The contents of the software include clear, accurate and illustrated summaries of the 20 core studies with particular emphasis being placed on the main themes of the course. The software is crammed full of quizzes which cover all of the core studies and themes, including methodology.

I’ve been lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the software and it’s superb – the CD first walks you through the 20 core studies giving you all the information that you need in the main panel with really interesting tit-bits in the side panel that will only add to students (and sometimes my) knowledge. The big selling point of the CD is the quizzes at the end of each of the studies – not only multiple choice, but image questions and true false. Great for students’ revision or even a revision exercise on the white board at the end of the lesson when you’re stuck for a filler for those last 10 minutes of the lesson ;)

Still on the quiz; a really nice feature is that when the user clicks on an answer you’re told why you’re right or wrong – keep your eyes out for funny reasons why too! On top of the interactive quizzes on the CD there’s a companion website that goes with the CD with lots of other matching exercises on it too.

A fantastic piece of software that any college would think is great – for more information pop over to LearnByIT for more information.

Hi I wonder if this resource from The Open University might interest teachers of psychology?
The Open University recently launched a website at http://www.open.ac.uk/openlearn to give free access to its course materials to anyone, as part of its mission to open up education for all. We have just published a 10 hour study unit on Exploring Psychology.

    http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/file.php/2850/knowlegde_maps/1183374514/epoch.html

It is very suited to those teaching psychology and those with an interest in the subject. When you open the EPoCH resource you will see a historical timeline, from around 1750 to 2000, with the names of over 1000 people. The timeline indicates when each person, mostly psychologists, began work and when they died (although a number are contemporary). It also indicates what important social and historical events were taking place at the time of their work. You can explore their biographies, methods, perspectives, topics and contexts.

I hope this is of interest. Great blog!
