I am teaching OCR for the first time and have given a test on dement and kleitman from the june 2008 paper. I'm not sure what marks to give for certain answers, even after looking at the mark scheme. could any examiners help by giving me some guidance: here are the answers i'm struggling with:10 Dement and Kleitman conducted a study on sleep and dreaming:
(a) Outline one finding about dreaming from the study. [2]
Any one from: dreaming takes place in REM more than in n-REM sleep. Eye patterns and content. Length of dream estimation. 2 marks
Other appropriate answers 2 marks
Partially correct answer 1 mark

A finding about dreaming is the lengths of time people are in REM

One factor about dreaming is that when a person is in REM, they are dreaming and their eyes seem to follow the action

One finding about dreaming from the study by Dement and Kleitman is that there was a definite relationship between the amount of REM sleep and the content of the dream

Dreaming mainly occurs during REM sleep

REM (rapid eye movement) mostly occurred during dreaming and when they were in a deep sleep

Dreaming only appeared to occur during rapid eye movement, not during non rapid eye movement

They found that 80% of dreaming occurred during REM activity, whilst only 7% of dreaming occurred in non REM activity

The type of REM movement is similar to and has a connection with what the person is dreaming for example horizontal REM may be from a dream of people throwing tomatoes at each other

Participants were more likely to dream during REM activity

That most dreams occur during the REM part of sleep
